Bernice Rennie, Songwriter
A strong black woman whose dream ‘To compose a song that will make women more aware of the power they possess to improve Society’ epitomizes how she has lived.
Bernice Rennie was born in Fyzabad. She was very active in her youth and played netball and table tennis. Bernice received her primary education at Fyzabad Anglican School and at the Palo Seco Government School. She later attended Iere High School, Siparia, where she successfully completed the GCE Examinations at Ordinary and Advanced Level.
Having set a goal of becoming a teacher, Mrs. Rennie successfully pursued a Teacher’s Diploma at Mausica Teachers’ College. Bernice has spent most of her adult life teaching English at Secondary School level both here and abroad.
Married, with two sons and now retired, Bernice has worked hard at her dream of writing. She has written several poems, skits and songs. Two of the songs have received national and international acclaim. In 1994, she received a Letter of Commendation from the Commonwealth Foundation for her song, ‘Our Commonwealth’. Bernice Rennie received the Borough’s award for her song, ‘Point Fortin – My Borough’ in 2001. She has been a burgess of Point Fortin since 1976 and still lives here.
