Mahaica Oval Refurbishment
The Mahaica Oval Pavilion as a sport pavilion is one of the most eagerly anticipated and important undertaken for Point Fortin. Our sports history tells us that some of our country’s top sportsmen and women came from Point. Mahaica Oval, as is popularly known, has been in existence for many years and for which many stories of sports glory have been achieved and documented.
The present administration of the Point Fortin Borough Council and the Point Fortin Corporation has the vision to retain some of the site’s old glory yest build upon it with the proposed construction of a new pavilion structure and associated sporting facilities. Far reaching is this vision that when completed, the Mahaica Oval Pavilion Project will also become a multipurpose venue for events other than sports such as social and cultural activities. The highlight of this new facility is a two thousand, five hundred seating capacity pavilion of architectural prowess.
The two-tiered tubular steel frame structure contains many services for interaction with both user groups that is the sports persons/administration and the general spectator. Public users will have access to several concessions booths, washrooms and change/locker rooms at ground floor level. The administration of this facility will include a management as well as maintenance staff who are expected to be full time employees of its daily operations. As it stands, the maintenance portfolio of this sports facility is important to its longevity, and in this regard both building and external maintenance must be considered an integrated function.
The Pavilion represents a modern forum of architecture which is designed for the comfort of and enjoyment of its many users and well as for its functionality. Planning and design considerations included facilities for the physically challenged as well as the aged. A linear horizontal passageway/corridor is connected to each tier as well as four staircases and two passenger/service elevators are strategically located along its pathway. Protective hand railing can be found along all traffic routes for the safety of the public.
Given the intended size and capacity of this pavilion, maintenance rooms are located vertically at each level. There are general stores, outdoor stores, garbage rooms etc. The facility’s main service core is located at the ground level where the electrical generator, kiosk, High and Low voltages etc can be found. Although not yet completed, it is anticipated, it is anticipated that this service core may be even be larger than originally expected.
The entire site will be installed with an approved security system which will monitor all activities from a control centre. Water storage capacity will be enhanced by the construction of an underground cistern from which the roof rain water run-off will be collected and utilized for both internal and external users.
The site’s activities revolve around the pavilion and to this end, we have provided two dual vehicular accesses off George Road, and a one-way access each off William and Neverson Streets. In addition, there is also an emergency exit from Modeste Road.
The main parking area adjoins these access routes within this site. Pedestrian traffic is confined to both Neverson and William streets and from which entry to the main pavilion seating exists. We anticipate that additional parking requirement will be fulfilled by use of streets adjacent to this site.
